Assignment #2: Sept. 11th Illness

Eight years have passed since the occurrence of the terrorist attacks of September 11th. Given the current controversy about health care in the United States, this discussion is still relevant.

Read the following articles.

After reading the articles, post a thoughtful reflection to the following questions.
  • How has money played a role in the care of 9/11 cleanup victims?
  • Who is at fault for the illness?
  • What chages in finance need to be made to correct the problem? Is healthcare a federal, city or individual responsibility?

20 comments:

  1. 1. Money has played a role in the care because the firefighters and rescue workers, haven't been able to get proper health care insurance for their lungs.
2.The people at fault for the illness is the federal government because this was an attack on america. There for the American government has to come to the aid of New Yorks fallen, as well as the rescue crews from the rest of the country. This is like saying the city of new Orleans is responsible for the illness of people from Katrina.
    3. There needs to be universal health care, the right to affordable healthcare sholdnt be just for those who can afford it, rather those who need it most.

  2. Illness Persisting in 9/11 Workers & Q & A: Anthony DePalma, Environment and Conservation Reporter.

#1. Money has played a huge role in the care of 9/11 cleanup victims mainly for the health of many people. During the horrible tragedy taking place in September 11, 2001, many people has suffered with the horrible air pollution from the fire of the building and damaged many peoples lungs which made a lot of people pay for their damages. Also the buildings and streets had to be repaired which also had a lot of money taking out of the Government. “This study, I hope, puts to rest any doubt about what is happening to those who were exposed,” said Mrs. Clinton, who was among those who pushed for $52 million in federal funding for health treatment for the ground zero workers, the first treatment money provided by the Bush administration. - States article #1, "Illness Persisting in 9/11 workers".

#2.Mayor Bloomberg (other then Bush) took blame for the illness. As it says in Article #2, The mayor has proved in five years that he is concerned only with the lungs of people who smoke and not those of us whose lungs were smoked out that day -9/11-. The article dealt with the federal response to the health crisis.
Mayor Bloomberg didnt do anything to help and many people suffered and complained about that.
However, Mayor Bloomberg announced a screening and treatment program that operated at Bellevue Hospital and then helped many people.

#3. Federal Government needs to provide necessary funding to cover Health Care coverage, for those directly affected by 9/11 cleanup efforts. Health care is a federal, city and/or individual responsibility because many people suffered by the smoke due which takes them to help us with the situation taken place during 9/11. As it states in article #1 - “There should no longer be any doubt about the health effects of the World Trade Center disaster,” -“Our patients are sick, and they will need ongoing care for the rest of their lives.”

  3. 1. money has played a huge role in 9/11 clean up victims. mainly because so many people were without healthcare had to be tended to, making more money being dished out and coupled with the fact that many things had to be replaced like buildings. it took a toll on the econmany pumping out money like that.

    2. i know im sounding a bit to the point and shallow but i blame it on the crash and our sercurity. If we were more prepared it would have never happend in the first place. there would have been no illness is there was no crash.

    3. i know we need to get funding for the healthcare we need but if we dish out our money willy-nilly, the stability of our ecomany will fall like a ton of bricks. we need to raise money to make sure it can be a stable transaction.
Helthcare needs to be a cities priority first then a individuals. because people need aid before they can fend for them selfs. but don't make it federal. they will control it and make it unfair.

  4. 1. It isn't the money that was an issue in this situation. Let me remind you guys that we are one of the most wealthiest nations in the world, it is the inability to delegate support to these victims that embodied the true issue
    2. For someone to throw fault at the USFG for being unable to perfectly meet the needs of these victims is a bit incredulous. Its not like we prepare for a disaster of this scale and uniqueness everyday. This was a travesty and as such its effects are going to be short and longterm and in all hard to treat and contain.
    3. No changes in finances need to be made. There just needs to be a more broad check up stystem the USFG follows when dealing with such disasters. The long term health issues should have been forseen and free healthcare for those individuals should have been provided

  5. 1.money has played a significant role in only the lives of the victims without healthcare or the lives of the victims who suffered from severe health issues resulting from september 11. obviously money has played a role in the lives of victims without healthcare because it takes care of their health needs since they were affectd by the disaster of september 11. those who suffered far more life-changing throat and lung diseases have greatly benefitted from money because even with decent health care, you still need more money to cover the finances of expensive treatments that come along with the diseases they caught. yet those who are right in the middle of these 2 groups; those who can pay for health care and dont have a life-threatening disease, dont benefit much from financial aid.

    2. i believe there is no fault for these illnesses. people got what they got because of the attack, and we cant sit down and point fingers at the attackers because its already been done. this was just a horrible event that happened, and it was going to have its domino effect on the health of other people, so there is no one to blame.

    3. to correct this problem, the city must be more direct with those who were affected by incident. cover their health care, and those who cannot pay for it and who were also affected.

  6. 1. Money has played a role in the 9/11 cleanup victums from not having enough money for health care. Many of the vitums didnt even own health insurance. Without money the vitums would not be able to cure their sickness.
    2. The fault for the sickness is the government for not being prepared for an outcome like this. They are responsible for the safety of everyone in NY. Lack of security even took place.
    3. The changes in finanace need to be made is a funding for health care especially the cleanup vitums of 9/11. Health care should be made affordable for everyone. This is the responsibility of the city. The city should provide the necessary health insurance for its people.

  7. 1. Money has played a very huge role in the care for September 11th victims. many victims did not have health care and could not pay their medical bills. people who were affected by september 11th had major complications medically and were in need of a lot of care. getting money for the care needed was very difficult for some families and victims. even families that had health care still had very expensive medical bills to pay.

    2. i do not think that there is anyone to blame for these problems. to blame the government and people who have power is unfair. no one expected the attack on september 11th and there was no way to prepare for the disaster that happened. after everything happened there was no time for anything to be changed and everything had to be handled right away.

    3. to fix the health care problem we need to figure out who was mainly affected by the attack on september 11th. the people who were affected by this terrorist attack should receive a break in their medical bills.

•How has money played a role in the care of 9/11 cleanup victims?

Money has played a role in the care of the 9/11 cleanup victims in a way that people who were hurt and affected had a really hard time paying the bills, and even so people who already had health care it was still hard becaouse it was too much money.

•Who is at fault for the illness?

honestly i dont think that anyone should take the blame from this because even people who had too much power couldnt do anything, also no was prepare for this. i really dont think is no ones foult in this.

•What chages in finance need to be made to correct the problem?

what needs to be made to help the financia is everyone need to be ble to coundt on health care not only sick people or people who needed but just everyone, because like no one is ever prepare for enythin. Is healthcare a federal, city or individual responsibility? i think in a way is federal, city and individual, everyone just need to wait for a change but hopefully that change will be made fast.

  9. Without money, the workers who do not have health insurance would not be able to get medically treated, and there breathing problems. The asthma and sinsinitis would not get any help.

Nobody has fault for the illness, the sick workers were doing there job at groud zero, and with the amounts of dust in the air, that became all the breathed in, without masks. Leading them to respiratory problems.

A doctor at Mt. Sanai said " Our patients are sick and they will need ongoing care for the rest of there lives" and 40% who are sick do not have health insurance, that being an individual responsability.

  10. 1) Money has payed a role in a way witch is helping the rescue workers and firefighters get helth care because they did not have it before.

    2) the people at fult for this is the government because they did not take action when America was attacked

    3) it should be a federal responsibility. the government should be spendoing more on the health care for the indaviduals who get sick from 9/11

  11. Money has played a role in the care of 9/11 victims because it has provided healthcare for those of the workers and/or victims that had no money for healthcare in hospitals. Of course this money has been put to make their conditions better.
I dont believe anyone is at fault for these illnesses. Its not like we all sit around everyday planning what to do if a major tragedy such as 9/11 happens. Who wouldve thought that the dubris from the towers would cause such damage to the workers lungs? These illnesses were not on purpose, no one planned them and no one was ready to deal with the aftermath of these attacks, victims and workers were rushed to hospitals as soon as possible so as you know the city was actually trying to help.
The only financial change should be on health care and hospitals around the city. Many people affected by the attacks do not have any health coverage and can not afford it. Therefore the city should provide healthcare to those in need, and if that isnt an option then they should make the price more flexible and affordable for everyone.

  12. #1. Money has played a huge role in the care for 9/11 clean up victims, it gave them healthcare they needed for the damage that has been caused to them by the debris and pollution from 9/11.

#2. I believe the workers themselves should have been more careful, used more equipment like facemasks, anything to protect them from the harmful pollution caused by the crash.

#3. They need to put more money to the cost of healthcare for new studies so they can help solve this illness. I think healthcare is a individual responsibility but if you can't meet the needs for it the city or federal government should help you in anyway possible everyone's needs should be met.

~Money plays a huge role in the events that happened during the 9/11 time. People are not getting the help with paying medical bills that they need. I would like to see some of the governments members in the situation that these victims are in. They would be pleading for help. This isn't fair that money isn't being provided for the helpers.
~ To be honost, I don't blame anybody for the fault of the illnesses. The people who got sick took their time and life to help out in a critical situation. I just blame the government for not helping these people.
~ I agree with Danny Randell, that there should be Universal health. Something where anybody and everybody can pay for the same kind of health care. Who's to say that a poor person is not as important as a rich person.

  14. 1.Money has played a huge role in the care of 9/11 cleanup victims, most of the workers did not have health insurance, so being that they were the ones working day and night lots of money needed to be contributed to the workers.
2.No one is at fault. This happened without anyones knowledge which caused people to be unprepared. Are you always prepared/thinking for the worst to happen when you leave your house?
    3. I think all jobs should require medical benefits for their workers. Its only right. This event should prove that anything can happen at any time. Health care is indeed a federal responsibilty. The government should take better care of its citizens. We are in America, "united we stand" how can we if we can't help each other out with healthcare.

  15. Interesting points raised so far. I'm glad everyone's thinking! Here's something more to think about. Where does the government get the money to do this? Should you, your teachers, your parents, etc., through their tax dollars have to pay for this? Get to class on time tomorrow, cos' I'm guessing we're gonna have some interesting things to say to each other.

  16. 1. Money has played a huge role in the care of 9/11 cleanup victims. The workers were affected greatly by working at the 9/11 cite because what they were inhaling had longterm chronic effetcs on their lungs. Not everyone who helped out that day can afford to get the medical attention they need, leading to them staying sick and not being able to work and have a weekly/monthly income from work.

    2. I dont believe that anyone was at fault for this. It was a tradgic event, that firefighters, the police, and volunteers, worked on. No one knew at the time that by working down there it would lead to longterm lung illnesses. If so they would have used more precautions. It happend all so quickly and was a major shock that no one was thinking of what can happen to them later on.

    3. There is one financial change that i believe should be made. The city should provide affordable funds for health care to all 9/11 cleanup victims and especially to those who cannot afford healthcare. Therefore, This should be the cities responsability, to provide it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1. Thousands of workers along with volunteers had been at ground zero to help out the day of 9/11 and so on. But they all suffered some consequences because of the toxic fumes that they all inhaled. So money does have a big role in this because not everybody have insurance for the types of medical care they need.
    2. I honestly don't believe theres any fault for the illness, if anybody i guess blame the people who decided that they should bomb the trade center.
    3. I think that the financial problem shouldve been taken care of to begin with, they shouldnt have drag things out; its already been a couple of years, and yet people still dont have the coverage to pay for the medical expense so they can take care of their respiratory problems.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1. From all the toxins in the air at ground zero, many people got sick from inhaling dangerous chhemicals. Money played a major role in the care of the 9/11 cleanup victims by providing healthcare for those without and ways to help people get better.

    2. I personally dont think theres anyone to blame for the illness. When it really comes down to it the only reason that this was occuring was because of the crash itself, so if there was anyone to blame it would be the men who hijacked the planes.

    3. I think that the city should really take care of the people who got sick from the smoke and chemicals that they inhaled cleaning up after the disaster. Money should be put towards new healthcare. I personally feel its a federal responsibility because they should be taking care of those who tried to help clean up the mess when the country was at its worse.

  19. Money has played a very important role in the care of 9/11 clean up victims. Many of them developed respiratory problems and were diagnosed with cancer. Some of these people have no health insurance and face medical problems that will never be cured. The government should provide these people the health care they need.
You can't blame anyone for these people getting sick. They did what they had to do and the ones who caused the world trade center to collapse are responsible.
The government should pay for the victims medical bills. This is an individuals responsibility because not every person has the same illness.

  20. 1. Money has played a huge role because alot of the people that helped clean the up the site after 9/11. Ended up getting very sick, and alot probably didn't have health care and thus either didn't see a doctor and got more sick because they didn't or they did see a doctor and got treatment which could possibly put them in debt.
    2. The city and the people in charge of the clean up,because they failed to give these volunteers the proper equipment to protect themselves.
    3. The victims should have the bills that were for treatment from the illness acquired at the 9/11 site paid for by the government, and health care is an individual responsibly unless its the governments fault your sick.
