Assignment #1: Sept. 11th Leaves its Mark on History Classes

Based on the questions below, post an appropriate response, which we will discuss in class tomorrow.

How should adults answer their children when asked, “Why did these events happen?” How should schools represent the people who piloted the planes? What has been the response of the US? How has the US changed since 9/11?, because of 9/11?

BE PREPARED TO DISCUSS THE ARTICLE - REMEMBER, A HUGE PART OF YOUR GRADE IS BASED ON PARTICIPATION!

  1. Adults should answer children based on how old they are. Now, to a 6 year old, you should say that some people do bad things to good people. If you are 12/13 you should be told the nature of these events, to at least the general details. Example, the child should be told what happened like they see it on television, so you say that people hijacked airplanes and flew them into buildings, because they are jealous of our freedom. As far as schools go, they should represent the people who drove the planes as soilders for their country, doing harm to innocent people. The response of the US is to violently look for terrorists, at any costs. Civilian life has became second to the Bush administration, to finding terrorists. The Us has changed because the media and government has started to get peoples attention by fear rather, than actual reporting.

  2. 1) Adults should answer their childern because other countries have envy for the U.S and thats how terrorism happens.
    2)??
    3) the responce of the U.S has been to go to war with Iraq
    4) the U.S has changed in a way we are more careful with what we do espically airport security and new immgrants that come to the United States

  3. Children should be spoken to according to there age. If a child asks a mature question based upon terrorism, then that child will be answere to with a proper response, such as an explination that terrorism occurs becasue other countries may not have the advantages that we have, and they envy that, which causes bad things to happen. schools need to represent the piolets as normal people no different then the ones in the plane. the pilots did not have anything to do with the terrorism attack. they were just as innocent. The united states has become much more aware with security all over the nation, especially in airports. Were paying a lot of attention to the incoming immigrants from other countries. 9/11 has given many people a sence of fear. But after having an 8 year anniversary people are becoming a lot more calm over the situation. it will still be a day that many will remmeber for the rest of their lives.

  4. Adults should answer their children when asked, "why did these events happen?" with more of a relaxed tone. Obviously, you won't tell a 5 year old what happened and how many people died, you'll usually tell them that a big accident happened. If it was someone much older -maybe 9 or 8- then you'd tell them with a relaxed tone (to not scare them) and describe how people from another Country came and destroyed many peoples lives and also killed because they were jealous of what we had - which was freedom. Schools should represent the people who piloted the planes as cruel pointless human beings, risking their own life to harm many innocent and caring people. The response of the US is to be aware of many things in life and mostly be away for the terrorists who no longer should be anywhere near the US. The US has definitely changed since 9/11 because since that cause it gave many people a warning and gave us a chance to realized that anything could happen, so now we are aware of the next situation that hopefully wont happen. & BECAUSE of 9/11, many people are risking their chances of taking planes and actually driving to places.

  5. Well a general statment should be used for all people. Regardless of age,it would be wise to say "the tension of the other nations became difficult to a point of hatred and dispair. Because of that disaster struck this great nation...futhermore this city...." The people should be viewed as "pawns to a much greater threat." The responce of the U.S was one not of hate toward the ones who afficted us but one that brought us together as a whole to do something right and great for this nation being the greatest act of selflessness in U.S history. Due to 9-11 america has bosted up sercurity in order to ensure safety thoughout the U.S and prevent another tragity such as the one on that day.

  6. Well, the details one should use to explain the situation really depend on what a parent thinks their child would be able to handle. Personally, I think you could tell a five year old as much as you could a twelve year old, albeit using simpler terms. You don't have to describe the suffering and pain of the thousands who were afflicted by the attacks to outline the situation. In a school setting, the people who hijacked the planes should be viewed simply as what they were: terrorists. A child's perception of what terrorism is would actually determine what they thought of the attackers, but in almost every nook and cranny of this country I think terrorism is frowned upon, and that's definitely putting it mildly. After 9/11, ours became a country where everyone was suspicious of outsiders, not to mention shocked at all that had happened. And I suppose that this view is still held by a good portion of the population. Obviously, because of 9/11 extremely tight airport security has become a nightmarish necessity. Also, because of 9/11 the United States brought its wonderful "War of Terror" to the forefront of every mind in America, and certainly to quite a few in other countries. And might I mentioned all the American lives lost?

  7. When an adult is asked by their children this question they should answer back with a respond the children could understand. Obvisouly they would not understand the real meaning of the attack due to their age. A simpler way to respond is to say that an outside country decided to attack the US because of previous conflicts that happened between them which ended up killing alot of people. As to the ones who piloted the planes, schools should just respond that even though they were bad people they still ended up being killed like the other people on the plane. The response of the US has been to go to war against Iraq. The US has also become more secured with immigration and airports. The US even searches for any threat of terrorism. The US has changed since 9/11 because it brought the country together and has tried to make the country as secure as possible for the people.

  8. I agree with Richard because if a young child asks this question you can't tell them exactly why it happened, then it would be difficult for them to understand. Schools should have tributes every year on 9/11, donate money etc. to organizations in honor of the pilots that passed. The U.S. has made restrictions more harsh due to this event, such as items you can and cannot bring on planes. There have been lots of changes since 9/11. We are at war , gas prices as well as grocery and taxes went sky high. Health care is limited. People have been laid off from their jobs, homes have been victims of foreclosure, the list goes on.

  9. 1. Adults who answer this question for their children would do good to look up some of the history behind it. This terrorist attack is one of the by products of the United States involvement in Afghanistan during the cold war. So when kids ask "Why did this happen" the answer needs to be the true answer. There were Muslim fundamentalist who see the United States past and present foreign policy as intruding and so they retaliated
    2. Those who piloted the planes were just doing their job. They didn't expect a hijacking and should not be looked down upon for being unable to stop the attack. What if you were told to do something out of your skill set to save thousands of lives? They should be seen as one of the many victims
    3. The United States' response has been a misconstrued one. While many might see wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as pointless, they were actually direct and indirect attacks against Islamic Fundamentalism.
    4. The U.S. has become a little tenser ever since the attack, however this has happened in our history before even more so during the cold war.

  10. Adults should answer their children when asked "Why did theses events happen" according to the childs maturity level, and their standards of parenting and knowledge on how well the child will take the news. Adults have different perceptions of parenting. Such as sheltering the child from fearful events, which in that case they may explain the event very mildy not exposing too many graphics and details. On the other hand the parent or adult may be very open with the child and explain the whole event from the history of it, to why the hijackers crashed the planes, and how much it has affected our country.
Schools should represent the people who took over the piloting of the planes as terrorists. They should explain who terrorists are, where they come from, and what they do to accomplish the acceptance from there leaders. They should also explain that not every "Muslim" person is a terrorist, or any other race or religion that terrorists may be.
The response of the US when these events first happend was disbelief, shock, fear, anger, and sadness.
The US has changed since 9/11 by becoming extremly militant in protecting our homeland security. Airports have become extremly strict and use many safety precautions to achieve security from danger. 9/11 has also brought on yet another long lasting war. This time, instead of fighting another country we are helping them build there army letting us join forces in exterminating terrorists.

  11. 1) It push American history to internationalizing itself.
2)They should be represented as terrorist.
3)The U.S found it as a reason to go into Afghanistan and fight the war on terror.
4)The U.S increased its security to be safe and careful, it also affected the way people view Muslims.

  12. Adults when asked why this has happened should answer their children with total honesty and give them the facts, the back story of how the relationship between the U.S and Afghanistan essentially became a hostile one. And the reasons these men felt like what they were doing was not unjust. When sharing these events schools should represent the pilots as victims the same as the passengers on the plane, and the victims in buildings Innocent people that had their lives horrifically and tragically taken away. Since 9/11 the U.S has changed in ways in that once again the American people have become patriots. And since 9/11 the United States has taken steps to make us. The people. Once again feel safe.

  13. I agree with what Kaylin. Adults should answer children based on thier age, if the child is quite young, one should put it in simpler terms, then one would for an older child. I also agree with what Ray said regarding looking up the history behind it. They should also inform the children that not all the people of that particular nationality are terrorists, it's only a fraction of the people, the ones who have gone "bad" (extreme fundamentalist) I guess, for the lack of a correct politically correct term... And those who were piloting the plane were as much victim as the passengers on board the plane, they weren’t informed beforehand that terrorists were board the planes in order to hijack it, so I feel that they should not be thought of in a negative light. As a result of 9/11 the US has really tightened security, especially at airports and has put in place more restriction. A direct result of 9/11 is the “War on Terror”, due to which thousands of soldiers have lost their lives as well as many of the civilians in the countries that are involve in the war (Afghanistan ad Iraq). The US economy is suffering, due to the mounting costs of the war, cause by 9/11. It’s sort of a domino effect. But a positive thing that has occurred out of this tragic event is that it brought us closer together as Americans, as Patriots.

  14. When an adult is asked "why did this happen?" by a child they should respond to the question based on the child's age. if a young kid asks that question the child should be explained what happened in a simple broken down way, that would not scare him or her. if the child is older and mature enough to handle the situation then they should be answered in as much detail as they are looking for. it is something that happened and something that every one will eventually have to learn about.
When this topic is brought up in school teachers should explain to students that the people who piloted the plane were terrorists. after they tell student that they should explain to them what a terrorist is. teachers should also teach students to to discriminate against one race because of a group of people that believe in something we might believe is wrong.
when this first happened the United States was in a state of disbelief. they were shocked to see something like this happen. they could not believe the amount of attacks we had on September 11th and the amount of people that lost there lives, and amount of families that have to live with the hurt and pain caused during these attacks.
Since the attacks on 9/11 the United States has become very protective. they have raised security levels in crowded places and places where a terrorist attack is more likely to happen. For example since the attack airport security has increased drastically. the United States has also been very protective of our land and what we believe in.

  15. 1)How should adults answer their children when asked, “Why did these events happen? Well as I am not an adult yet, and have no kids I would answer with the things i know such as the U.S's position at the time of the incident and the history regarding before the attacks were made. Kids today are more mature and open minded than before and just because of the fact that they are kids and parents want to protect them it shouldn't be the case to lie or put things in "perfect world" case. In a few words adults should answer as simple and truthfully with a straight forward personal opinion on the even.

2How should schools represent the people who piloted the planes? As we all know the attacks were a spontaneously planned incident, they should be portrayed as the U.S citizens they were and also people should be explained that they were just doing their job and to put themselves in their position, they were victims of the attacks like everyone else who diseased.

    3) What has been the response of the US? the obvious attacks between the us and Iraq, Afghanistan, the increased security and the increased on going terrorist eradication.

4)How has the US changed since 9/11?, because of 9/11? besides the increased security and the tension between countries, I think the way people think of other people and the increased suspicion between people.

  16. A responce from a parent on this topic should be based on a childs age, maturity, and understanding. Obviously you wont tell a young child the whole truth or many details, you would probably answer with a simple sentence or two like "There are bad people in the world and they do bad things". Older and more mature children should be answered with details and the history behind why this event occured. As for the people who piloted the planes, or otherwise known as the highjackers, in a school setting they should be known as terrorists because they are. They highjacked planes and killed many americans, theyre just a small part of a larger threat we may one day face. The US responded in numerous ways, many people were shocked and saddended, while the government decided to take action and "keep the peace" between America and Iraq. The US sent military troops to Iraq and they began to create a better civilization for the people who reside there, and also executed Sadan Hussain, meanwhile they are still on a search for Osama Binladin. The US has changed its way of security, everyone is alot more cautious with their surroundings. The amount of security personnel in public places such as airports has increased by far and they've made lists of items that passengers are not allowed to carry on their flights such as perfumes, shampoos, or batteries. These precautions are definately due to the scare the September 11th terrorist attacks caused Americans.

  17. When children asks such questions to begin with, i think that adults should give them a sweet and simple answer. If they're young, adults shouldn't tell them that 9/11 was a suicidal attack or anything that detailed. A reasonable answer for questions like how do we represent the people who piloted the plane, or what has become the response of the US should be something like; the people who piloted the plane are very bad people, and the US decided to go to war with them. Ever since 9/11, things start to change such as, airport security has been more strict, and/or Americans discriminate on that particular race. Even if adults think children should know the whole truth, i don't believe they would understand the issue that was taken place in the first place.

  18. 1. How should adults answer their children when asked, “Why did these events happen?”
I would tell my little children that sometimes, bad things happen to people, and you learn from it; something that doesnt sound too harsh. To my older children, I would explain to them the situation that was occuring in 2001, much more in detail.
2.How should schools represent the people who piloted the planes?
They should be represented as who they were, terrorists. Of course in their eyes they saw themselves as hero's, dying for their country and their God. This side of the story is often neglected, which is acceptable considering the fear that was instilled in us after that day. Yet it can be parallel to the attack we made on Hiroshima and Nagasaki with the atomic bomb. I'm sure the Japanese judged our attack to be deadly and cruel, but we saw in a different perspective. This can also be applied to the September 11th attack, in which our views contrasted the terrorists views. It's all about the contrasting perspectives of us, and the people who piloted the planes.
3.What has been the response of the US? How has the US changed since 9/11?, because of 9/11?
Airplane travel has gotten alot safer, security in New York city has tightened their belts, and the whole country has grown stronger after being knocked down.

  20. Adults should answer their children according to how old they are and their child's maturity level. Younger children cant necessarily take things as well as older kids can, so depending on their age parents should decide in which way they explain to their children why these events have happened. Its easier for younger children to be scared of things happening in the world as to an older kid who can handle things better. As for the people who piloted the planes they shouldnt be taken on in a negative way for they werent aware that the plane was going to be hijacked in the first place. In my eyes, they are victims just as the rest of the people on the plane that morning.
The response of the US has been a great deal of grief and uncertainty. Many people mourned the deaths and casualties of that day, astonished that something like this would happen to a bunch a bunch of innocent people.
Since 9/11 the US has become alot more into protecting the people of the United States. Airplane security has been improved and ensured. Everything is done cautiously to prevent an attack like this to ever happen again.

  21. When an adult answers a childs question they should be completely honest with them. Lying to them could change their opinion about the truth. These events occured due to the beliefs of a terrorist group called the Al Qaeda. They are extremely religious and considered dying as a good thing. The people piloting the planes were doing what they believed was right. Americans believe in the complete opposite. Since 9/11 occured muslims adopted a stereotype as terrorist. Airport security is much more strict then it used to be. What really changed the US is the war with Iraq. This was a reaction to 9/11 and it is still costing us today. American soldiers have been putting their life on the line for so long and billions of dollars are being wasted.

  23. I already shared my opinion on this during the U.S. History class, but this is it written: If a child is too young to recognize how events take place or happen...then they should just get a simple answer such as "crazy, angry people did this". If a child is old enough to realize how people act and think, then I would give that child my opinion on how I view those terrorist crashing into the world trade center: It was a conspiracy and a plot planned out. The 'terrorist' were middle eastern people hired to play the role as the infamously known 'pissed off Muslims, or arabs'. George Bush NEEDED to have a reason to invade Iraq for oil worth billions of dollars. Not only Bush, but the whole U.S. Government. So I would let that child know (my opinion) that the people that flew those planes into the WTC were people on a mission, to invade a country. As how America changed after these events, is that the economy suddenly went into a spiraling downfall. All of the sudden, the price for a stock went way down, and there are suddenly lost jobs. So now people need to depend on the government for support. Which is another plan to have citizens in the palm of the governments plan (opinion). There has been alot more airport security, and alot more protection.
