2. Then, please read the "Handouts" on pp. 75 and 76 of the Teaching the Levees Workbooks.

3. Based on the materials dicsussed, do you believe the tragedy associated with Katrina, and the breaching of the Levees was fundamentally shaped by race, and class?

If not, what alternative hypotheses can you offer?

  1. Many people believe that statistics don't lie. They point to numbers that seem to speak out loud. Blank percent of minorities were affected by Katrina and that is why it was an intentional attack. The truth of the matter is that those who were consider second class citizens since the beginning of the towns history should be expected to get the raw end of a deal especially when it comes to a natural disaster. Race and class definitely played a role in the levees being breached and anyone trying to find an alternative is running away from the inevitable truth

heres what i think when the levees broke every1 in new orleans was basically screwed so they needed help. who else is their to help them the gov't and bush but wait they didnt do anything they let ppl drown. so basiclly ppl had to find ways to survive. and i find it really ironic on how bush shows up 2 week after the hurricane and when eeeeeeeeevery 1 that hates him was evacuated. i dont know thats what i think but yah they based it by race and class

  3. Race and class did play a major role in this disaster. The government was well aware that the people affected more by the disaster were lower class people. These were considered the poor people of New Orleans. Most of the population were black. The fact of ignoring their suffering was ignoring the truth. The people had no other "bigger figure" to ask for help. When help came for many it was just too late and disorganized. Regardless of race and class, its the governments duty to protect its people.
